Pulo di Altamura is a doline or sinkhole located about 6 kilometers north-west of the city of Altamura in Puglia in southeast Italy.

The northern side of the sinkhole is almost vertical and its caves were likely occupied by prehistoric man.
Doug, Martha and I, checking it twice…
Altamira Man, an approximately 150,000 year old Neanderthal fossil discovered in 1993 was found in an area very close to Pulo di Altamura. What you see in the above foto is a thick layer of calcite on the bones and rocks. It remains “in situ” in order to avoid damage that could result from moving/extracting it from where it was discovered. (online foto).

The National Archeological Museum in Altamira is fascinating.
Old part of Altamura.
