We took an overnight flight to Santiago de Chile Tuesday night 1/6/26, arriving Wed morning and making a connecting flight to Temuco in southern Chile. My friend Marianne and I then picked up a rental car and headed into the Chilean Lake District.
Stratovolcanos, glacial lakes, wild rivers & waterfalls, ancient trees, thermal hot springs, and extensive trekking opportunities. Have I forgotten anything?
Oh, and tasty Malbec.
First stop: Parque Nacional Conguillio, centered by Llaima Volcano. For those keeping score, the last eruption was in 2009. No worries.Lava flow from Volcan Llaima (background) back in the day.
Cabin in the woods
We had reserved this little full-featured A-frame out in the middle of fkgnowhere. Wood-fired hot tub on the deck….so my woodburning talents are not going to waste.A good-sized solar panel powers this off-grid house. Gas to heat water, wood to heat house and tinaja (literal translation: clay jar. It’s the word used for hot tub.)With a good fire going, the tinaja was almost too hot, but somebody’s got to get in, right? (someone must have fed the fire a little too much!) Nice view of Llaima from here.
