Juan Peron and Peronismo have played an out-sized role in Argentina for over 75 years (even today, well after his death in 1974).

Just to exit Argentina we stopped, parked the car, stood in two interminable lines, had a multiplicity of documents stamped (having a car ratchets things up a couple of notches), and drove off to the Chilean customs house after an hour.

Rinse and repeat. After about another hour at the Chilean aduana, voilà, we were in Chile. But not until they search every vehicle for fruits, vegetables, and misc produce. They confiscated 4 eggs from our cooler and our remaining supply of tinaja wood! (Doesn’t everybody travel with firewood for a wood-fired hot tub?)
It’s quite a bit more verdant
west of the cordillera.
