On the road to Tronador.
Gorgeous lakes, big mountains.

Tronador occupies a special place in my Chilean volcano cosmos. I have always been in awe of this extinct volcano, and have glimpsed it from afar
several times in both Chile and Argentina
for almost 50 years. I love the name (means Thunderer) and I love the glacial silhouette.

But this is the first time I will be as
close as I will be today.

Getting close!
This is the image I hold of Tronador.
It’s a winter shot back in the day (like
50 years ago) when its glaciers were
not shrinking like they are now.
(Online image.)
The fork in the road….it was 60 km of rocky, dusty one lane roads.
Glacial lake with icebergs floating that have broken off Ventisquero Negro, which you can see in upper right corner. They show pics of the glacier in 1942, and it filled where the glacial lake is now. Same story – the world’s ice is melting.
Getting real close!
We could drive as far as “base”. From there a short trail went to the
mountain jutting up in front of us.
Melting glacier running off.
